Puppyhood is a time of rapid growth and discovery. Vaccinations are one of the most important tools we have to protect puppies during this critical stage.

A Puppy Vaccination Roadmap for New Owners

At Canyon View Cares Orem, we focus on preventive care that supports long term health and peace of mind.

Why Puppies Need Vaccines

Puppies do not yet have fully developed immune systems. Vaccines provide early protection against serious illnesses and help prevent the spread of contagious diseases in the community.

Core Vaccines for Every Puppy

All puppies should receive the following:

DHPP Vaccine
Protects against distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and parainfluenza.

Rabies Vaccine
Required by Utah law and vital for public health.

Leptospirosis
Often recommended in Utah due to wildlife exposure and outdoor activities.

Lifestyle Vaccines Based on Routine

Additional vaccines may be recommended if your puppy:

  • Attends daycare, boarding, or grooming facilities

  • Frequently interacts with other dogs

  • Travels outside the local area

Common lifestyle vaccines include Bordetella, canine influenza, and Lyme disease.

Puppy Vaccination Timeline

Most puppies follow this general schedule:

6 to 8 weeks
First DHPP vaccine

10 to 12 weeks
DHPP booster
Lifestyle vaccines as indicated

14 to 16 weeks
Final DHPP booster
Rabies vaccine

Completing the series ensures reliable immunity.

Continuing Care Into Adulthood

After the puppy series, ongoing protection includes:

  • DHPP boosters every three years

  • Rabies boosters per regulations

  • Annual lifestyle vaccines when appropriate

I came in today with my very, very, old kitty. It was very clear that today would have to be the day we put him down. When we walked in staff already knew his name, checking him in promptly. One nurse could see how distraught we were and quickly lead us to a room so we could have some privacy. When it came down to it, our nurse helped up make the right options and was transparent on the prices. Every staff member was caring and compassionate with my sweet kitty, surrounding him with love in his final moments. I appreciate the staff members giving us time to spend with him. When we were ready the doctor came in and carried out the procedure with care, reassuring us every step of the way. This was the best way we could've let go of my kitty. I read some other reviews critiquing the fact that they were left to leave on their own time, but for my family, quietly going made it easier. One of the best things they did for us was a handwritten condolence card where each nurse expressed their sympathy. I have the card hanging up now and everytime I look at it I can see how much love they have for their patients. All in all, thank you so much for helping my family today your kindness meant the world to me.

We have three melodramatic dogs, who have tried numerous vets in Utah County. No other vet compares to Canyon View Cares!

There is something different about this place. Every single employee here loves animals. They spend time talking to you and making friends with the pets. I have noticed other vet offices trying to rush you through your appointment. That has NEVER been the case here!

My dogs say thank you and appreciate the numerous bribery treats you offer them!

Had an emergency visit for a sick kitten. The team was super welcoming and awaiting our arrival after calling in advance. Treated our kitten as well as we could have hoped for, and provided recommendations on what to look out for rather than recommending all tests up front. Really appreciate their help checking up on our kitten to make sure we got her healthy.

We have been going here for years, but haven't been since doctor DeGearing left. Our 6 year old Chessie Bear was really sick when we got back from vacation and he needed a vet immediately. Even though they had a full schedule, and we're short two employees, they fit us in.

Unfortunately, our dog had abdominal masses and needed to be put down. It was an emotional day. They arranged for us to be there and gave us time before and after. I couldn't recommend them enough! Their staff even made us a card, and gave us the blanket Bear had been on to help our other 2 dogs heal. My 15 year was devastated and it helped her through this tough time.
