How to Help Senior Pets Stay Comfortable With Arthritis

As pets age, it’s easy to assume slower movement or less playfulness is simply part of growing older. But in many cases, arthritis is the real culprit. This common joint condition affects countless senior dogs and cats, and if left untreated, it can greatly impact their quality of life.

At Canyon View Cares Veterinary Hospital – Orem, we focus on recognizing arthritis early and providing care that helps pets stay mobile, comfortable, and active well into their golden years.

Why Pets Develop Arthritis

Arthritis is caused by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints. Once this protective tissue wears down, bones rub together, resulting in swelling, stiffness, and pain. Age is the leading factor, but arthritis is also influenced by genetics, body weight, prior injuries, and even weather changes.

Our wellness exams give us the opportunity to catch these changes early, long before mobility is severely impacted.

Subtle Symptoms of Arthritis

Because arthritis develops gradually, owners may miss the early signs. Look for:

  • Hesitation when jumping or climbing stairs

  • Stiffness or limping after naps

  • Reduced interest in walks or play

  • Difficulty standing on slick surfaces

  • Changes in mood, such as restlessness or irritability

Managing Arthritis for Long-Term Comfort

Although arthritis can’t be cured, it can be effectively managed. Our veterinarians may suggest:

  • Weight management to decrease pressure on joints

  • Therapeutic diets and supplements to support joint health

  • Safe pain-control medications to reduce discomfort

  • Physical therapy or rehabilitative exercises to build strength

  • At-home adjustments such as ramps, rugs, and supportive bedding

I took my cat here because he had an eye infection. I called the day before my appointment and asked a bunch of questions and the gentleman on the phone was extremely patient and helpful! And when I showed up for my appointment the nurse and Dr. Were excellent! They were very knowledgeable and also patient. Super friendly as well. I will definitely be coming back here again for regular check ups etc!!
