Maybe my dog needs a pedicure

Why does my pet keep licking his paws?

There are numerous reasons your pet may be licking their paws, including allergies, pain, or anxiety to name a few. If your pet is licking for more than one day, further investigation is warranted.

These are the top 5 most common reasons pets may lick their paws:

  1. Allergies
    1. Environmental allergies such as grass or pollen
    2. Food – most commonly due to a beef or chicken allergy
    3. Products such as a new laundry detergent
  2. Pain
    1. Injuries, arthritis, and overgrown nails, are potential causes of pain. Since your pet cannot verbalize their pain, they do the only thing they can do, which is lick the area that hurts.
  3. Infections
    1. This can include yeast infections, bacterial, viral or even fungal infections.
  4. Boredom/Anxiety
    1. Paw licking causes a dopamine and endorphin release that has a calming or soothing effect.
  5. Interdigital cysts
    1. These cysts often develop between the toes, but can also occur on the paw pads.

Treatment for each of these conditions is different. Please schedule a visit with your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment for your pet. If your pet is licking to the point that their paws are red, swollen, or missing hair – please utilize a deterrent such as a cone, until your pet can be evaluated by a veterinarian.

I just switched over to Ribbonwood clinic from A Caring Vet. My last vet changed their policy and required appointments every 6 months to refill my dogs medication which is absurd so I did some research and came across Ribbonwood as an alternative. I am always a little nervous switching doctors because not all of them are great. However, I met with Dr. Whiting today and he and his staff were awesome. He sat down on the floor with my dog and asked questions and listened to everything I had to say. Although my dog has been living with her condition for 6 years, he spent extra time making sure I understood everything and reminding me of important details about her disease. Dr Whiting also recommended an alternate pharmacy for my dogs meds which saved us some money. The cost of the appointment and blood work (that was done in office while we waited) was super reasonable. Would highly recommend going to Ribbonwood if you are looking for a new vet.

Amazing, caring, and very helpful vet tech staff, my dog Shy was so excited to go back and see them today. I can’t thank them enough for helping me figure out what’s going on with Shy, they were also so attentive and sweet getting him a blanket to lay on so it was easier for him to lay down and stand up. Dr. Griffiths was so informative talking with me through all our options and next steps in a very difficult time. Thank you all so much. You’ve all made a big difference in a sweet old dogs life.

One of our older personal dogs had an open wound from what we believe was a ruptured cyst, and the staff at Canyon View Cares were thorough, caring, and quick with getting his treatment started.

I was super hesitant to use a new clinic with one of my senior dogs (my epilepsy detection dog at that), especially as an emergency visit, but the staff were able to answer all of my questions, and left me feeling secure with his care.

Thank you guys for taking great care of our boy!

I've been going to this veterinary office for years and have been more than satisfied. Dr. Griffiths is great! He spayed my puppy and did an extensive dental treatment on my senior dog. Both experiences were totally positive. He and his staff communicated with me well before, during, and after the procedures. The office is clean and pleasant, my dogs were treated with care, and I have always been happy with the cost of services. All of my friends that I've referred have thanked me and are so happy they found this wonderful veterinary office. Highly recommend!
