Nutrition Tips for Supporting Joint Health in Aging Pets

As pets grow older, joint stiffness, soreness, and reduced mobility often start to take a toll. While professional veterinary care is essential, nutrition plays a key role in helping pets maintain comfort, flexibility, and overall quality of life. At Canyon View Cares – Orem Veterinary Hospital, we combine diet, supplements, and supportive therapies to help senior cats and dogs feel their best through their golden years.

1. The Foundation: Balanced, High-Quality Nutrition

Good joint health begins with what your pet eats:

  • Protein and Muscle Support: Plenty of high-quality, lean protein helps preserve muscle mass, which supports joints and reduces strain.

  • Healthy Fats (Omega-3s, etc.): Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and support joint lubrication and comfort.

  • Vitamins, Minerals & Antioxidants: Elements such as vitamin E, C, zinc, and correct calcium/phosphorus balance support cartilage and bone health, and protect against oxidative damage.

At Canyon View Cares, our general practice services include nutrition advice tailored to age, weight, existing health conditions, and lifestyle. You can find more about what we offer under our Services section.

2. Supplements That Make a Difference

When diet alone isn’t enough, certain supplements can help protect joints and ease discomfort. Here are some of the most effective options:

  • Glucosamine & Chondroitin: Aid cartilage repair and help slow degeneration.

  • Cetyl Myristoleate (Cetyl-M): Particularly useful in early joint issues or mild arthritis, helps improve mobility and reduce pain.

  • Injectable Joint Support (e.g., Adequan-type treatments): When more aggressive treatment is needed, injections can sometimes deliver faster relief.

  • Natural Anti-Inflammatories: Products like Duralactin (or equivalents) can be gentler on the stomach while still helping reduce inflammation.

Always talk with our veterinarians before beginning any supplement; we ensure what you choose is safe and appropriate for your pet’s overall health profile.

3. Integrative Care: Diet + Therapy + Monitoring

For best results, nutrition and supplements should be part of an overall joint health plan:

  • Weight Management: Extra weight increases joint stress. Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most effective ways to slow joint wear.

  • Regular, Joint-Friendly Activity: Gentle walks, swimming, or controlled movement help maintain flexibility and muscle tone without overburdening joints.

  • Diagnostic Monitoring: Routine check-ups and possibly imaging allow us at Canyon View Cares to detect changes early so we can adjust treatment before problems worsen.

  • Supportive Therapies: Massage, laser therapy, hydrotherapy, or physical rehab may be beneficial additions.

4. Modifications for Home & Lifestyle

Some simple changes at home and in daily routine can ease strain and make life more comfortable:

  • Cushioned, supportive bedding to reduce pressure points.

  • Non-slip surfaces or rugs so pets don’t slip on slick floors.

  • Ramps or pet stairs for beds, couches, or cars instead of jumping.

  • Elevated bowls to reduce bending for food and water—especially in pets with neck, spine, or hip discomfort.

5. Tips for Pet Owners: Putting It All Together

  • Consult with Your Veterinarian First: Before starting any supplement or making major diet changes.

  • Observe Early Signs: Hesitation to jump, slower rising, stiffness after rest—catching these early allows for gentler intervention.

  • Choose Trusted Brands and Veterinary-Grade Products: Quality matters for safety and effectiveness.

  • Start Early & Reassess Frequently: As pets age, their needs change; schedule regular wellness visits so the care plan can be adjusted.

  • Combine Nutrition, Lifestyle & Therapy: The synergy between diet, physical activity, supplements, and environment tends to produce the best results.

We loved Canyon View Cares! I called around to find a place near me that could do this surgery and accidentally found Dr. Griffiths at Pet Medical Services!! If you are like us, and loved Dr Griffiths, that is where you will find him. 4 stars instead of 5 because they couldn’t do the procedure we needed. I called to have them do a gastropexy on our Great Dane, but because Dr. Griffiths is no longer working there they no longer have doctors that are able to do that specific surgery. Bummer, because I would have stuck around if they had someone who could.

Amazing, caring, and very helpful vet tech staff, my dog Shy was so excited to go back and see them today. I can’t thank them enough for helping me figure out what’s going on with Shy, they were also so attentive and sweet getting him a blanket to lay on so it was easier for him to lay down and stand up. Dr. Griffiths was so informative talking with me through all our options and next steps in a very difficult time. Thank you all so much. You’ve all made a big difference in a sweet old dogs life.
