Canine parvovirus is one of the most serious illnesses seen in young and unvaccinated dogs. At Canyon View Cares Veterinary Hospital Orem, we believe education is a powerful tool in keeping pets safe. Knowing what Parvo looks like and when to seek care can make a critical difference.

Understanding Canine Parvovirus

Parvo is a viral infection that targets the gastrointestinal tract and disrupts a dog’s ability to absorb nutrients and fluids. As the infection progresses, dogs can become dangerously dehydrated and immunocompromised in a very short period of time.

Common complications include:

  • Severe fluid loss

  • Vomiting and diarrhea

  • Increased risk of secondary infections

Parvo Awareness: Protecting Puppies and Dogs in Orem

Prompt veterinary treatment is essential.

How Dogs Are Exposed to Parvo

Parvo spreads through contact with infected feces or contaminated environments. The virus can remain active for long periods on:

  • Grass and soil

  • Shoes and clothing

  • Food bowls, toys, and leashes

Because of this, dogs can be exposed even without direct contact with a sick animal.

Signs of Parvo to Watch For

Early symptoms can resemble mild stomach upset but often progress rapidly. Call your veterinarian if you notice:

Changes in Behavior

  • Extreme tiredness or withdrawal

  • Sudden loss of appetite

Digestive Symptoms

  • Frequent vomiting

  • Diarrhea that may contain blood

Physical Changes

  • Fever or low body temperature

  • Signs of dehydration or weakness

Vomiting and diarrhea together should always be treated as an urgent medical concern.

Parvo Treatment at Canyon View Cares Orem

While there is no cure that directly kills the Parvo virus, supportive care allows your dog’s body the time it needs to recover. Treatment plans may include:

  • On-site diagnostic testing

  • IV fluids and electrolyte support

  • Anti-nausea and comfort medications

  • Careful monitoring throughout treatment

Early intervention greatly improves survival rates.

Keeping Your Dog Protected

Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent Parvo. Puppies should complete their full vaccine series, and adult dogs need routine boosters to maintain protection.

Until vaccination is complete, it’s best to limit exposure to high-risk public areas where Parvo may linger in the environment.

Had an emergency visit for a sick kitten. The team was super welcoming and awaiting our arrival after calling in advance. Treated our kitten as well as we could have hoped for, and provided recommendations on what to look out for rather than recommending all tests up front. Really appreciate their help checking up on our kitten to make sure we got her healthy.
